Well today I have more than just an iPhone app for you, today I give you a new way to search the web: SearchMe:  http://www.searchme.com/  SearchMe.com is still in Beta, but they have a new clever way to search the web, by letting you see a cover flow like view of the web sites matching your search. You can also filter by categories appear that relate to your search.  In addition to there web site they also have a mobile site, and a new native iPhone app.

Todays App is:  Searchme by Randy Adams

You enter your search query and you can select the category you want to search, or use the select all option.

Your Results then show a mini page view in a cover flow type view, with a summery at the bottom.  You can also pinch and zoom the pages.

Rotating  the phone also switches to a full cover flow view.

This is a cool new way to view search results not only on the iPhone but on the web as well.  If you double tap a page from the cover view in the Searchme application it automatically the page in the built in Safari application.

iPhone App for 12-14-08

Posted in Comments, iPhone App of the Day, New iPhone App of the Day with tags , , , on December 14, 2008 by mikesiphoneblog

Hello all, I’m back!… ok, ok…… hold your applause lol I have been traveling on business and working on a new/old Job I will start on Jan 1. (Long story).  I have found that trying to post an app of the day each day is a bit too much for me, with the demands of my job & family so I will try and continue to provide quality apps for you as I can, but I do not expect to be able to make a new post each day.

Enough about me and on the the app for today.   Todays iPhone app is a newly released app for the iPhone but one that I have used on other mobile platforms in the past.

Todays App:  Earthcomber by Earthcomber LLC

Earthcomber is a Navigation application that searches and displays things around you.  There must be 100′s of app store apps that do the same thing, but this app does more and does it better.  It is not just a front end for the built in Google maps application like some of the other apps of this type.

Earthcomber includes the most extensive list of categories and sub categories of any app of this type:

img_0001

You are also able to personalize your lists:

img_0004

When finding Restaurants and nearby things you also have access to reviews, not only a link on the map:

img_0002

You can also create an account to save location, and categories to your “My Radar”  page, where you can also add friends and see there location on the map:

img_0003

This seems that it will make a very useful application,  when traveling or looking for new places near your hometown.  There are a few bugs in the account sign in and password process, and it seems that some times if there is not an item close to you in a particular category (especially when searching Restaurants by Cuisine) that it will list noting, while in other categories with items close, it will also list items 100′s of miles away…   This is the first release and I am sure this app will only get better.

See a demo here at the Earthcomber web site: http://www.earthcomber.com/splash/index.html

iPhone app of the day for 11-16-08

Posted in iPhone App of the Day with tags , , , on November 16, 2008 by mikesiphoneblog

Sundays are always a slow App store day, so today I will blog about a useful free app.

Todays App of the day is: AroundMe by Tweakersoft

Around me is a location aware app that allows you to find the nearest (Gas station, Hotel, Supermarket, etc…..)

img_000115  img_000210

I Know there tons of Applications like this in the App store, and I have used lots of them, and this app is easy to use and actually provides accurate results, and did I mention it was free?

img_00036

Like the above search for the nearest  Apple Retail Store, provides a list in the app of the Apple stores sorted by distance from your current location.

img_00045

Selecting an entry in the list will show information on that location and then give you the option to view in the Map application.

iPhone app of the Day for 11-14-08

Posted in iPhone App of the Day with tags , , , on November 14, 2008 by mikesiphoneblog

Ok so for todays app, I will talk about some things we should have on our phone.  That is a Tip Calculator, and a Unit Converter.  I know, I know, these two type of apps must make up 1/4 of the apps in the apps store, and there are lots to choose from.  So, your probably asking your self, what makes todays app pick so special.  Well I will tell you,  Apple only gives us 9 pages of apps That is only 144 spots, + 4 on the task bar A total of 148 apps places with 19 of those built in apps that can not be removed.  So we only have miserly 129 apps we can add.  and I currently have 263 apps!   So when an app comes out that can replace the function of multiple apps in one app, I think this is worth a look.

So todays app of the day is:  HiConvert by Chillingo Ltd.

img_000112

HiConvert is Unit Converter and Tip Calculator in one.

img_00029

For Conversions this app has it all, with over 3,000 units in 108 categories.

img_000113

The tip calculator, quick and functional (even if it is missing a round up/down function)

Ok so, what’s the big deal you might ask…. when this single app can replace 3 other apps (a tip calculator, and two unit converters, as I could not find one that had all of the units I wanted)  It is something to blog about.  Not only did this app free up 2 spaces on my iphone, it does what it does very well.  It is fast and easy to use and has 4 programmable spots for the most used functions.

iPhone App of the Day 11-13-08

Posted in iPhone App of the Day, New iPhone App of the Day with tags , , , on November 13, 2008 by mikesiphoneblog

Today in my iPhone blog is the battle of the premium Twitter apps.  Before I start, I know there are a ton of Twitter apps in the iTunes App store, and lots of them free, and some of them good, but this review is between my two Favorite paid Twitter Apps.

Todays Twitter apps are:

The newly released challenger:  Tweetsville by Tapulous

The incumbent Twitter champ:  Twittelator Pro Big Stone Phone

Tweetsville has a clean and fast interface.

img_000111

Twittelator Pro has a selectable theme and very colorful interface.

img_00052

The Tweetsville app has all the features of the desktop version of Twitter

img_00028 img_00044

Twittelator Pro has many more features then Tweetsville

img_00063 img_00072

Twittelator Pro is my Twitter app and has a place on the front screen of my iPhone, but the folks at Tapulous, the same people that bring us Tap Tap revenge and the very poplar free Twitter app “Twinkle” released the Tweetsville app, and now Twitterlator has some real competition!  Unlike the free Twinkle app, Tweetsville does not require an additional account to function, and in look, feel and function is nothing like Twinkle.

Twittelator Pro <vs>Tweetsville:  Tweetsville has unseated Twittelator Pro and is my new favorite  iPhone Twitter app, and has replaced Twittelator on the front page of my iPhone     While Twittelator Pro offers more features and functions, I find that I do not really use most of the features.   The interface of Twittelator while colorful, is a bit busy and somewhat harder to use than Tweetsville.  Tweetsville (in simple list design, as shown) is such a fast, clean, simple and easy to use interface that, even without the additional features, it is my pick of twitter apps.

Tweetsville is not some stripped down app it has all of the features you would, want from a Twitter app, Including Timeline, Private messages,  adding and removing of the following of people.  View people’s profiles directly in the app, see who they are following and who is following them, built in fast browser to follow links without closing the app.  You can add photos to your tweets, from camera roll or camera.

I don’t want to diss Twittelator Pro as it too is a very good Twitter app, but for me Tweetsville is just better.
